Ave Maria is on of Schubert's most famous songs. it is a musical version of the Catholic prayer Hail Mary. it was also set to music by Gonoud who used one of Bach's song. Other composers who set this to music are Anton Bruckner, Mozart and Liszt.
Schubert's version is the most famous. it was written in 1825 as D.839. It has been used in movies and sung by many famous opera and pop stars including Frank Sinatra and Beyoncé. it is sang at weddings and funerals. The Bach/Gonoud version is the second most famous version. Bach was Lutheran and wrote many songs and hymns for use in the Lutheran Church. This was also sang by many opera and pop stars. the Virgin Mary is venerated in the Catholic and Eastern Orthodox Churches, as well in the other Eastern Christian churches. Most Protestants do not venerate the Virgin Mary as in the Catholic or Orthodox churches the Eastern orthodox have also a lot of hymns to the Virgin Mary. There are also a lot of other Catholic hymns and songs to the Virgin Mary. Schubert, List and Bruckner were all Catholic. List became a monk later in life. Bruckner was known for his strong faith and like Schubert also wrote several settings for the Catholic Mass. I have discussed Bruckner before and wrote an article on Him. He is known for his symphonies more than his religious music.
