jmc's classics
I sometimes watch the CBS TV series "Mom" it is about a dysfunctional mother and daughter. Both were teenage mothers and have had substance abuse issues. the opening theme is the Overture to Mikhial Glinka's Russlan and Lubmilla Overture. Glinka(1804-1857) is one of the early Russian Classical Composers. His main compositions were operas. Like most other Russian composers, his music is nationalistic in nature. He studied and lived in Germany before returning to Russia. Russian operas have not been as popular as Italian, French or German operas. However Russia and Ukraine have produces a lot of famous opera singers. They have also produced a lot of famous bassos. Even during the days of the Soviet Union there were a lot of excellent opera singers from these areas. Glinka is mainly remembered today for Russlan and Ludmilla and and another opera A Life for the Tsar. Both operas are nationalistic in nature. I like the TV show Mom. I hope that it does bring more attention to The above mentioned opera. I am disappointed because my other favorite show "Two Broke Girls" has been cancelled. I think that it did run its course. Since I have been out of college, When I start watching a TV show it gets cancelled on me. A lot of sti-coms run their course and are not cancelled and then get boring. I am not in to soap operas. They are called "soap Operas because they were sponsored by soap companies. I like the Sit-com Mon and I hope it lasts a few more seasons before it runs its corse.
