jmc's classics
In the Radio Arts foundation's web page and Facebook pagerafstl.org there is a link to an article in The Guardian that says that more young people are listening to classical music. The Guardian is a British newspaper.
It is an interesting article. It says that young people are being exposed to classical music via concerts and film soundtracks. It has a link to Scala Radio which is a British Classical web radio. As of now I have not checked it out. It would take to long to recap the entire article. As I have said before, Classical Music is used a lot in film soundtracks and commercials. There are many reasons why it is becoming more popular among younger people in recent years. Country music had been popular with younger people. Person ally, I think that much of the lyrics of Country music are very depressing. Songs about being down on your luck etc. sounds depressing. That is what a lot of the Country Music Lyrics are about. I went to college in Springfield, MO near Branson and it was popular in that area of the country. I do like some country Music. I have never visited Branson. I am worried about Branson going bust. if it happens that area of the country will suffer. In recent decades, Springfield, MO and the surrounding area has been growing. The article is mainly about the scene in Brittan. I don't know much of it is happening in America. I hope that it does make a stronger comeback among the younger generations in America.

The Christmas season is over. We sill not hear Christmas music until November. Then for almost two months. Except for the "Christmas In July" on cable. It is cold. I want warmer weather
Among the newer generations of conductors is Dutchmen Jaap von Zweden he was born in 1960. At the age of 15 he won the Oskar Back violin competition which gave him the opportunity to study at the Juilliard School in New York City. He is also a violinist. At age 18 he became a concert master with the Concertgebouw Orchestra in Holland. A concert master is an assistant conductor. He caught the attention of Leonard Bernstein who invited him to conduct a rehearsal in Berlin.
He made his American conducting debut with the St .Louis Symphony Orchestra ( I was not there). he was the Music Director of the Dallas Symphony Orchestra from 2008-2018 and is currently the Conductor Laureate for the Dallas Symphony Orchestra Music Director of the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra. At the same time he is ow the Music Director for the New Your Philharmonic orchestra, which started in 2018. He is a very busy man and probably has racked up a lot of frequent flyer miles On October 28 there was a feature on Jaap Von Zweeden on 60 Minutes. It profiled his life and education. He is married with three children. One of which is autistic. He is involved in. In the year 2000 he set up the Papageno Foundation which provides music therapy for autistic children. Papagano was a character in the Mozart Opera The Magic Flute. He has a web page jaapvanzweden.com to find out more about him. Many of the prominent conductors, singers, soloists also have to be "Rock stars' also in this day and age. Happy 2019. I am glad the Holidays are over. No big news on the music front. The Grammy nominations are up. In the Orchestra Performance, Choral etc. Beethoven, Strauss, Nielsen, Schuman, Lully, Verdi, Rachmaninoff, Stravinsky, Bartok, Bruch, Glass, Handel, Fuchs,Vaughan-Williams all have nominations. I hope to write more on it before the Grammys.
It has been quiet in the news on the Musical Front. There is another version of A Star is Born wiht Lady Gaga. I am not a fan of Lady Gaga. her real name is Stephanie Germanotta. The Grammys is going to be televised on February 10. They will not say much about the Classical winers. We will wait and se what happens. |
