jmc's classics
As mentioned in the previous entry, the piccolo is a mini flute. or half flute. It is usually present in orchestras and concert bands. It has a higher octave than the standard flute.
Beethoven, Hayden and Mozart have used it in their musical works and symphonies. Other composers such as Vivaldi, Peter Maxwell Davies and Jeff Manookian have wrote concertos for the piccolo. others such as Lowell Liebermann and Robert Beaser, etc have written sonatas for the piccolo. It resembles a small flute or a fife which is a smaller. the fife is smaller and much simpler. It has ony six finger holes on it. I remember the piccolo from when I was a child. it was popular in the school bands and orchestra. It is not as common or famous as the clarinet, flute etc. The clarinet is also used for jazz and big bands and is the most popular and well known of the woodwind instruments.

I volunteered at the March 23 Coffee Concert. It was an interesting program Rimsky-Korsakov's Capricio Espagnol, Respighi's Pines of Rome, Rautavaara's Cantus Arcticus and Erkki-Sven Tuur's Piccolo concerto.
Gema New was the conductor and was the soloist. Chomack is a flute player with the SLSO. A Piccolo is a small flute. Gemma New is a resident conductor with the SLSO she is originally from New Zeeland. Rimsky- Korsakov(1844-1908) was a Russian Composer. this is is most famous work along with his Russian Easter Overture. he also wrote some choral music. "Capriccio" is for whim. Tchaikovsky wrote Capriccio Italian. This piece has a lot of gypsy themes in it. Ottorino Respighi (1879-1936) was an Italian this piece is part of a trilogy which also includes the Fountains of Rome and the Festivals of Rome. I am familiar with this piece. many centuries old pine trees dominate Rome. Rautavaara (1928-2016) was a Finn and a protégé of Sibelius the greatest of Finish Composers. He is the second most famous Finnish composer. this piece is a concerto for birds and orchestra. It includes recordings of bird calls. I enjoyed this piece. It is unique. Both Rautavaara and Sibelius were in to nature and incorporated it into their music. The final composer Erkki-Sven Tuur (1959- ) is still living. he was born in Estonia which was part of the Soviet Union. The Finnish and Estonian Peoples are related. both languages are part of the Finno- Uralic language family. the title of this piece is "Solastagi"a which is term for nostalgia. The Piccolo is a small flute. I remember them from when I was a child. During lent and Easter many people watch Passion Plays about the crucifixion and Christ's passion. I would recommend also listening to Bach's St. John and St. Matthew Passions or seeing a live performance of it. It may last three hours but it is very spiritually uplifting!
I did not watch the Oscars. Shape of Water was too eerie. for me. the movies that nobody watches usually get the awards. Hollywood give awards to and recognizes pedophiles and rapists and people who degrade the country. They don't have the same values as the rest of us.
I am glad that Alison Janey got Best supporting actress for he role in I Tonya. I have seen her on the TV sitcom Mon. I went to the SLSO concert this past weekend. On the bill was Benjamin Britten's Sinfonia Di Requien (Opus#20), Camille Saint Saens' violin Concerto #3(Opus #61) and Ralph Vaughan Williams' Symphony #4. Vaughan-Williams works do not have opus numbers.
Cristian Macelau was the guest conductor. He is originally from Romania and now resides in Philadelphia. James Ehnes was the soloist. he is originally from Manitoba in Canada and resides in Florida. Britten and Vaughan Williams were British. Saint Saens was French. I am not as familiar with Britten but I am with The later two and their works. all three lived out their lives in the 20th Century. Britten's work was composed in 1940 while he was staying in New York. It was commissioned by the British council in New York and was supposed to commemorate the 2,600 anniversary of the Japaneese Imperian Dynasty. Vaughan-Williams(1872-1958) is British and did a lot of research in to British and English folk music. He was also a noted conductor. The fourth Symphony dates from 1935 between the two world wars. It was dedicated to Arnold Bax a fellow English composer. It has much influence from Beethoven especially his Fifth and ninth Symphonies. I am not familiar with the fourth Symphony. I am more familiar with Vaughan-Williams Fifth and Second Symphonies. He also wrote chamber music including two string wuartets and a string quintet. He also did write some film Music. Camille Saint-Saens (1835-1921) is the oldest of the three. he was a child genius and is sometimes called the "French Mendelssohn" although I don't see much similarities between the two of them. Saint-Saens' third Violin Concerto(Opus# 61) is one of his most popular works. He wrote two other violin concertos, 2 cello concertos five piano concertos and some short pieces for violin and orchestra and five symphonies. He is considered the first major composer to have written film music. The copy of This work that I have is the Opera Orchestra of Monte Carlo with Henryk Szeryng on the violin and Edouard Van Remoortel conducting. And yes a small postage stamp country such as Monaco does have a national orchestra. I enjoyed the concert. It was not as crowded as I thought it would be. I did enjy the concert. |
