jmc's classics
I have heard and heard on NPR and Yourclassical.com that there are being released many wax cylinders that have never been released. On Yourclassical.com there is an article that states that many pre 1923 recordings are now public domain and are becoming available. Many of the recordings on both articles have never been heard until now. Wax cylinders were the first medium of recordings. They were invented by Thomas Edison in 1877. Wax cylinders were popular until WWl Discs or 78 RPMs were invented about 1900. for a few years the two mediums competed.
Many of the wax cylinders don't have labels on them - so we don't know what is on them. These cylinders are very delicate. I hope that the project is successful. It will be interesting to hear what is on them. Lion al Mapleson who was the impresario of the Metropolitan Opera in New York made over 100 recording of performances and rehearsals on the early 1900's. Some of them have been put on 33 RPMs and CDs. These are the only recordings of some of these singers. Much of the recordings that are becoming public domain is choral music. Many of the discs are unknown-we will find out when it is digitalized. Whatever it is, it will be interesting to hear. The site Your Classical is produced by American Public Media and Minnesota Public Radio. It has some interesting articles and features. Among them Is Composers Datebook. for more information check out their web page yourclassical.org I hope that this project is successful!

I did not watch the Grammys. I have not heard of any of the classical artists or performers that won. I did not watch the Oscars either. however, this Oscars will be remembered for a long time because of Will Smith.
