jmc's classics
As mentioned in the previous entry, the piccolo is a mini flute. or half flute. It is usually present in orchestras and concert bands. It has a higher octave than the standard flute.
Beethoven, Hayden and Mozart have used it in their musical works and symphonies. Other composers such as Vivaldi, Peter Maxwell Davies and Jeff Manookian have wrote concertos for the piccolo. others such as Lowell Liebermann and Robert Beaser, etc have written sonatas for the piccolo. It resembles a small flute or a fife which is a smaller. the fife is smaller and much simpler. It has ony six finger holes on it. I remember the piccolo from when I was a child. it was popular in the school bands and orchestra. It is not as common or famous as the clarinet, flute etc. The clarinet is also used for jazz and big bands and is the most popular and well known of the woodwind instruments.
