jmc's classics
I am not much in to Shakespeare. I liked the 1999 film "Shakespeare in Love" with Gwyneth Paltrow. I also remember the Gilligan's Island episode where the castaways staged a musical based on Hemlet. This is one of my favorite episodes along with the final episode where Gilligan was forced to dress up in drag. Today I don't think that this iconic TV show would make it. Many Pacific Islanders and Polynesians would complain that it stereotypes them and is not politically correct.
In this episode they make use of two arias form George Bizet's Opera Carmen. The Toreador song and the Habanera. Carmen is one of the most iconic operas. I remember this singing orange sings the Habanerra on Sesame Street. Another area used in this episode is "Night of Stars" or Barcarolle From Jaques Offenbach's opera "The Tales Of Hoffmann". Both Bizet and were French Men. Bizet (1838-1875) is mainly remembered for this work. He wrote other operas and several orchestral works. He wrote a Symphony which is still popular and his L'Aresienne Suite. Offenbach (1819-1880) is remembered for this opera. he also wrote operettas and a cello concerto. I have not yet heard the cello concerto. The Tales of Hoffmenn was not completed in his lifetime. This one area is still popular. An operetta is a shorter opera and the plot is often make believe. There is a movie in the works based on Gilligan's Island. I hope that it comes out soon. I hope that it is not delayed because of the Coronavirus mess. Shakespeare was one of the most famous English writers. Hamlet along with Romeo and Juliet are his most famous works. he wrote man other plays and poems. There are many plays and operas based on his works. I have been to the Saint Louis Shakespeare Festival. It takes place in June and features one of His works. I hope it goes on this year. It would also be nice as a tribute to Gilligan's Island if there would be a musical made based on Hamlet using that music!
